Summary of Duties:

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Associate Program Officer is responsible for managing assigned research projects contracted through the Washington State Academy of Science (WSAS). Specifically, the position will independently plan and organize project operations with primary responsibility for resource management and project outcomes.

Research projects conducted by the WAS primarily relate to the biological, physical, social sciences, health and engineering disciplines, the work associated with managing these projects is primarily intellectual in nature.

Research: Conducts background research in support of contracted projects and prepare related papers and/or summaries. Compiles reports and provide data to project constituents.

Project Management: Manages all phases of research projects by coordinating research activities, developing project materials, organizing/facilitating meetings, workshops, research interviews, and discussion groups. Directs the work of assigned personnel/project participants to include graduate students, contractors, and volunteers.

Business Development: Assist the Executive Director with program/project development, to include prospectuses and fundraising. Assignments include coordinating the submission of grant proposals, composing and/or editing correspondence, reports, presentations, newsletters, webpages and other documents, and proofing and editing materials for accuracy, appearance, readability and style.

Other Duties: From time to time, perform other duties as required/assigned.

Required Qualifications:
  • A Master's degree or a professional degree in an appropriate related scientific or engineering discipline with at least three (3) years relevant work experience. A PhD in a relevant scientific or engineering field may be substituted for up to two (2) years of the required work experience.
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite of software, to include Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Preferred Qualifications:

Doctoral degree in the biological, health, social, or physical sciences or an engineering disciplines.

Monthly Salary: $4,508.00 - $6,767.00, Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position. Successful candidates typically begin up to mid-point of the salary range.

Temporary End Date: This is a temporary position expected to end on June 30, 2024. Renewal is dependent on the need for extension and/or if additional funding is secured to extend employment.
