Description
The City of Brevard is looking to hire a Water Treatment Plant Operator to join our team of operators. This position will be responsible for a variety of maintenance, operational, and laboratory duties designed to produce quality, safe drinking water.
This position will normally be scheduled to work Monday through Friday but will occasionally be required to work
evenings and weekends to cover other shifts as needed.
This position will be responsible for preventive and scheduled maintenance of building and grounds to include lawn mowing, trimming trees, painting, and other general maintenance duties. In addition, this position will serve as a Plant
Operator which will include monitoring the plant's operation through observation, mechanical readings and the results of standard chemical and biological tests and to make necessary adjustments in the process as conditions or test results dictate.
Candidate will be hired in based upon qualifications and certification level:
Examples of Duties
Performs general routine maintenance of building and grounds to include lawn-mowing, trimming trees, painting, fixing leaks in pumps and valves, and other general maintenance duties.
Performs general preventive and scheduled maintenance; makes routine inspections and makes minor mechanical repairs or adjustments; assists on major maintenance and repairs.
Makes regular tours of the plant and checks intake, motors, generators, pumps, settling tanks, filters, clarifiers, chlorinators, and other equipment for proper functioning.
Monitors plant processes through the computerized operational control (SCADA).
Records data from various meters, gauges, and dials; logs daily, weekly, and monthly activities.
Monitors laboratory results to determine process adjustments including chemical feed changes, sludge disposal, backwashing filters, detention time, etc.; adjusts water plant to reflect changing creek conditions, especially regarding turbidity.
Starts and stops water plant operations.
Performs standard laboratory chemical and biological tests.
Regulates and adjusts motors, pumps, blowers, valves, and other apparatus to meet changing operating conditions.

Analyses plant performance and makes chemical feed and other adjustments consistent with supervisory guidelines, back washes filters.
Performs related duties as required.
Qualifications
Graduation from high from high school supplemented by course work in chemistry or biology and some experience in the operation and maintenance of machinery and equipment, preferably in a water or wastewater treatment plant; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
For applicants with existing NC Water Certifications, classification and pay will be based on certification levels.
Special Requirements
Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
Candidate will be hired in at an Operator Level based on Certification Level:
Plant Operator I: Ability to obtain or possession of North Carolina Water Operator's Grade C Certificate within 12 months of hire date.
Plant Operator II: Possession of North Carolina Water Operator's Grade B Certificate
Plant Operator III: Possession of North Carolina Water Operator's Grade A Certificate
Ability to obtain North Carolina CDL with Tanker Endorsement license within 12 months of employment.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Working knowledge of the operating characteristics and maintenance requirements of water and/or wastewater treatment plants.
Working knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, and permitting requirements.
Working knowledge of the occupational hazards of the work and of necessary safety precautions.
Some knowledge of standard laboratory test and procedures used in a water or wastewater treatment plant and of chemistry and mathematics.
Working knowledge of the use of technology to record data, prepare reports, and monitor and operate plant equipment.
Some knowledge of hydraulic, chemical and mechanical principles pertinent to water or wastewater treatment plant operations.
Ability to operate and use a variety of tools and equipment required for the maintenance of building and grounds.
Ability to detect flaws in the operation of mechanical equipment and to determine proper remedial measures.
Ability to conduct routine laboratory test.
Ability to understand and follow moderately complex oral and written instructions.
Ability to read meters, charts, and technical manuals and drawings accurately and to maintain records of shift operations.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers and superiors.
Ability to prepare accurate records of work activities.
